The Beach Bums are Home

What a fun week at the beach. I wasn't sure how 16 people in one house would be, but we had a great time. The house was at 112B 8th Ave. in Surfside. It had 6 bedrooms and 5 1/2 baths. I got the bedroom with two double beds so all of the kids could sleep in the room with me. It had it's benefits, like a couch, television & garden tub. We left town on Friday at 4:00 and traffic was insane leaving Knoxville. We only made it to Newport before we had to stop for dinner. Next stop - Spartanburg to sleep!! Saturday, we got on the road a little before 9:00. Traffic was okay until we got about 60 miles from the beach and we sat in traffic for about an hour total. Now don't forget, Dad is on Mom's motorcycle and he is sweating in the heat while we are sitting almost still. We arrived at the beach around 4:00 and got everything unloaded. The rest of the family arrived around 6:00. All the kids got to do the first night was swim in the pool. Me, Jennifer and my brother got nominated to go to the grocery - yuck!! We went to Wal-Mart and I have NEVER seen one so busy and sold out of almost everything. I was so glad to get out of there. $336 later!!

Sunday we got up and headed for the beach. Molly wasn't impressed with any of it. She stayed pretty close to my lap the whole time. She did finally start digging around my Mom's feet and she would spread the sand back out wit her toes and Molly told her "Granny, your messing everything up!". Maggie took to the ocean on her boogie board like an old pro. Sunday night we had a steak dinner at home and called it a night.

Monday we made our way back to the beach after a big breakfast spread thanks to Uncle Terry. Molly finally got friendly with the water when it was time to go back to the house for lunch. We cleaned up and made our way to Barefoot Landing for some shopping. Mission - Find a Webkinz!! We finally found a beagle (named Annabella) at a kite store. She wanted a black lab, but figured she better not be picky or she might not get one.

Tuesday we played in the ocean and had a good time at the beach. Molly's fears were finally gone. She still didn't want to go out in the waves and if you walked that way, she would cover her mouth. We spent the afternoon at Broadway at the Beach. There was a theater there, so we took the girls to see Surf's Up. They had a special on Tuesdays that you could bring your own bucket and they would fill it with popcorn for $.50. Their movie tickets were only $5. When the movie started, there was a picture of the statue of liberty with pretty clouds in the background. I heard Maggie tell LeeAnne, "look at those beautiful clouds". She must take after her great grandfather!! Molly slept through the first half and then watched the rest. I couldn't believe she slept, it was so loud. Maggie got a hair wrap put in and she was so proud of it. Afterwards we walked around a little, but Papaw's leg was hurting him really bad, so we ate dinner at Joe's Crab Shack and then went home. Margaritaville had a 2-3 hour wait.

Wednesday was cloudy/raining, so we decided to go back to Broadway at the Beach without Papaw so we could see the rest of the shops. I really wanted to eat lunch at Margaritaville, but they were on a 1 1/2 hour wait by noon. Oh well, it wasn't meant to be. The rain clouds opened on us while we were waiting for Jerry and Cameron to get finished in MagiQuest. We all had flashbacks of Disney World. We made our way home and took advantage of the weather and we all took two hour naps. The girls only got to play in the pool and it was 11:00 before Maggie went back to bed.

Thursday we played in the ocean and since I hadn't gotten much sun, I went without sunscreen - bad mistake!!I was so sunburned. We all went to play putt-putt in the middle of the afternoon (hot as blazes - bad idea). Then we went to Murrel's Inlet and at at Nance's for dinner. Reminder to self- not a huge fan of crab legs any more. It's funny how I really like things for a while and then totally lose my liking for it. Story for the night. Dad of course couldn't go out with us, so he asked Mom to just bring him something back. We originally requested a grilled chicken sandwich from Arby's, but when Mom told him that it was out of the way, he said Arby's would be okay and to get him a flavor of the month milkshake. He never said he wanted anything different. We ordered him a grilled chicken sandwich and a milkshake (they didn't have a flavor of the month, so we got him Jamocha). Mom had brought back some of the hush puppies from our dinner. When we got back and gave him his food, he was so disappointed. He had been dreaming of a roast beef sandwich and their curly fries. Now granted the poor thing has been cooped up in the house all week unable to do hardly anything for himself. I actually did feel sorry for him and offered to go back, but he didn't want me to. While we were out, I had called Mike to have him price airline tickets. Mike called me back on Dad's cell phone and told him our plan. He of course loved the fact that he was in on our little plan and was quick to let us know he wasn't going to fly home. We did convince him to agree to ride home in the van and that we would leave on Friday evening.

Friday morning I could tell Dad was feeling worse, so I told him if he could wait until the girls had some play time in the ocean that we would get cleaned up and leave around 2:00. I hurried around before we left for the beach and got everything packed up and the car organized. Luckily I had taken out one of the middle seats, so we were able to put a beach chair in it's place and Dad sat in the back seat with Molly and propped his leg up in the chair. Believe it or not, we got in the car at 2:00 and was on our way home. We stopped at Zaxby's for dinner and Molly got her hands on the drink she was sharing with Maggie. Maggie started fussing for a drink and Molly told her with her most serious, big girl voice "you chew up your chicken, you can have a drink". Maggie was furious that Molly was calling the shots and when she did give her the drink, it was empty. We got home at 10:00 and dropped Papaw off so he could pack his bags for the hospital. I took the girls him and got them settled (Maggie was asleep). I went back to get Dad in Mike's car only for him to say he had left a very important bag that he needed in my car. Back to my house, back to his house and then sit and wait for him to get ready. We got to Baptist Hospital around 11:15 and they didn't do the ultrasound until 12:25. The poor ultrasound technician got called in from home and all she would tell Dad was next time he should listen to his family and go to the hospital at the beach. That confirmed what we already knew. The door soon came in and said it was a deep blood clot and that he was checking him in. The nurse gave him a shot of pain medicine in his IV and it instantly hit him. It scared him, me and the nurse. It gave him pains in his chest and made him dizzy. After our little scare, they took him to room 208 and once he was settled in, I headed home for a little sleep. I got home around 2:30.

Today I headed back to the hospital around 11:00 because I was the only one home from the beach. They told him around 10:30 that they were sending him home, so we spent the whole day thinking we were leaving any minute. They taught me how to give him shots in the stomach and we were finally discharged at 7:00. What a long day of sitting and waiting. Dad watched the news all week and he said he was going to solve the murder mystery before he went home from the hospital and coincidentally that held a news briefing at 6:00 and announced they had found her body. Now he will have to find something else on tv to keep him entertained. Luckily Cacki wasn't busy today and she was able to come spend the day with Mike and the girls. Thanks Cacki!!
